Camp Joy Update31 Aug 2007 10:51 am

Not too much is happening right now – but in a couple hours, a lot will happen.  We’ve had no camp this week and so we’ve spent a lot of time getting ready for other stuff and doing maintenance and building projects.  Most of us had Monday off because we’re working this weekend with a couple retreats.  At 5pm today, 13 or 14 couples from the staff of a church in Milwaukee will arrive and will be here through lunch tomorrow.  Right before lunch tomorrow, all the students from BCM (yes, like Glen, Matt and Dave Rains and scores of others) will arrive to spend the afternoon playing in the Bog and softball and they’ll have a nice banquet and leave after dinner.
Next week, Monday is a “holiday” – which doesn’t mean much of anything in most ministries and Christian schools and colleges.  :) It’ll be our last day to do all our last day preparation for school camps – Marquette Manor will be here from Tues to Fri.  Well, sorry this is so short – I’ve got to go unload the Waukesha truck now…

Camp Joy Update22 Aug 2007 07:24 pm

Hello CJ friends!  It has been raining here like crazy since Saturday (we’ve had a couple partial days of non-rain, but not too much)!  The soccer field and softball diamond have been pretty much submerged since Saturday evening.  Three of our horses wandered into the mudpit and sank to the bottom, never to be seen again.  We offered the campers 10,000 points per horse retrieved, but to no avail.  Well, I’m kidding about the horses, but the rain has been frequent and heavy!  Checkmate ended early because of rain (do you have any idea how hard it is to make tally marks on a piece of paper when your ink keeps running?!?).
We have 85 teens this week from Northwest Baptist Bible Church (or is it Bible Baptist, I can’t recall…).  They’re a lively bunch, constantly cheering and clapping and occasionally getting a little rowdy.  We’ve had to do cabin inspections because if we don’t, the cabins will become incredibly nasty pigpens.  The scores have been ranging from 97 to 39!  The cabins are dismissed to the dinner line in order of their score, and the worst score has to pick up all the bus-tubs after supper.  The teens have frustrated one of our housekeepers by repeatedly moving a couch all the way across the fireside room several times.  I think it’s actually kind of funny.  I might have done that if I were a teen…
I haven’t been in the services too much – there’s a lot to be done to get ready for school camp (starting in a week and a half) and I’m pushing hard on that.  The Men’s Quartet sang (except it’s not a quartet anymore since Ben H. and Abraham joined) and their preacher called us “the Lakefront Six.”  Hmmm.  I don’t think that title will ever grace the cover of our platimuss record, off the charts hit CD…
We have a week with no camp next week!  That will be VERY different!  I won’t know what to do with myself with no campers to tell funny jokes to…  But it will be a great time to get a little rest and to finish all the work that needs to be done before school camp.  I might even get to finish those bookshelves that I started 12 weeks ago…  We will be busy during September – four week-long school camps, two weekend retreats in between (so no weekend – even worse than teen camp, I think), and then mostly weekend retreats after that.
One thing that I’m excited about is that during our Home School & Parenting Retreat in October, I’m going to be building and launching model rockets with the teens.  I haven’t done that for probably 10 years!  I’m wondering about a good way to get one to explode into a fireball in the air.  If you have any [relatively] safe suggestions, pass them along.  :^) I was very impressed that the rocket kits were delivered less than 24 hours after I ordered them online – and I didn’t even pay for overnight shipping!  So if you ever need hobby supplies, I highly recommend www.a2ztoys.com!!  Anyhow… Well, y’all have a great [insert appropriate time of day here]!  I’m off to clean a bathroom now :^)
